Prempeh College was established through a partnership among Asanteman, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, and the colonial government.
The college opened on 3 February 1949 with fifty students. Its formal opening brought together church leaders, chiefs, members of the Kumasi Traditional Council, and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, who gave the school its land and name.
Identity
Presented by the first headmaster, Rev. S. N. Pearson, the crest uses the college colours on a quartered shield. It includes the Ashanti stool, a cross, the founding year, and the college motto.
The college’s original motto, “Ɔman pa fa pem ne suban pa,” served until 1964, when it was changed to “Suban ne Nimdeɛ,” meaning Character and Knowledge.
The Campus
The campus was designed in 1948 by architects Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. Its blocks, courtyards, and covered walkways reflect the tropical-modernist approach used in a number of West African public buildings of the period.
The J. A. Kufuor Auditorium and the college’s tenth and eleventh houses were dedicated in 2023.

Headmaster
A Methodist minister and old boy of the college, Rev. Asare was appointed headmaster in November 2023 after heading Kurofa SHTS.
He trained at Wesley College of Education, Kumasi, and holds B.Ed and M.Phil degrees from the University of Education, Winneba.
