Prempeh College won the inaugural National Science & Maths Quiz in 1994, defeating Achimota School in the final.
Prempeh returned to the final in 1996 and won a second championship. The college reached the final again in 1997 and finished behind Opoku Ware School.
The 2015 and 2017 titles
Nineteen years separated the second and third titles, but the college’s place in the competition never disappeared. In 2015, Prempeh faced Adisadel College and University Practice Senior High School in a final that remained close until the last riddle. Prempeh finished three points ahead of Adisadel to secure its third national crown.
The fourth title arrived in 2017 after a commanding run through the knockout stages. Prempeh scored 49 points in its one-eighth contest, then produced 82 points in the quarter-final against Ghana Secondary Technical School and Aduman Senior High School. A 55-point semifinal performance against Mfantsipim School and Mawuli School carried the team into the final. There, Prempeh scored 53 points and finished two points ahead of St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, with defending champion Adisadel College in third place.
The 2021 title in Kumasi
The 2021 championship brought the national competition to Kumasi and gave Prempeh a chance to pursue title number five in familiar surroundings. The team advanced from the preliminary stages with decisive wins. In the quarter-final, Prempeh scored 67 points against Sogakope Senior High School and Anglican Senior High School. Another 67-point performance in the semifinal held off Opoku Ware School, which scored 59, and KNUST Senior High School, which scored 38.
The final brought together three regional and zonal champions: Prempeh College, defending national champion PRESEC Legon, and first-time finalist Keta Senior High Technical School. Prempeh earned a perfect 10 in the Problem of the Day and entered the closing stages with the title within reach. At the final bell, the college had 53 points. PRESEC finished with 49 and Keta SHTS with 30.
That result completed a sequence of championships in 1994, 1996, 2015, 2017, and 2021. It also preserved a unique connection between Prempeh and the competition: the first school to lift the trophy remains the most successful school from the Ashanti Region.
Other final appearances
The record also includes near misses that reveal the programme’s consistency. Prempeh finished as national runner-up in 1997 and returned to the final in 2022 as defending champion. Across changing formats, contestants, and venues, the college has remained a regular presence in the final stages.
Each title belongs to a particular team, supported by teachers, trainers, alumni, and fellow students. Selection begins long before the televised rounds, through lessons, internal contests, and months of practice.
